A great friendship is formed when both parties have mutual respect with one another and sharing similarities between them. Friendship is something that could not be bought or sold, but it is something that is far more worth than gold. Friendship is always a part of your life; something essential in each and every of our daily life. I would like to use this opportunity to write about my pal, buddy and friend - Lance Corporal Michael Tan, who will be soon leaving us for Philippines.
I remembered the day when Michael joined Boys’ Brigade back when he was a Form One in year 2012 as a recruit. He was so small and tiny in stature. I was surprised at that time as I had never expected such a small little guy like Michael to join us regularly in our weekly BB parades. As days gone by, Michael’s performance in the company had proved me wrong. He may look like a mouse outside, but he has an undying spirit burning inside him and is always ever ready to take up every task that is assigned to him. Michael was one of the fastest growing Recruits in the company and soon his potential was discovered – admin work. His writing skills were a gifting as he could produce an inspiring write-up report and interesting camp reports without much difficulty.
Year 2013 was the second year of Michael joining BB, and he was a Private as well as a squad leader. Year 2013 was the very first year that the school made BB compulsory for the Form One boys to join. It was a tough year but Michael did not show any sign of despair. The strong character of his made him persevere through all conflicts in the company. As a result, Michael was promoted as a Lance Corporal in June 2013. The promotion has spurred Michael to perform even better in the company. He continued to contribute to the company with his talented writing skills and it has been a blessing to the company. Michael is also someone that will look after others and provide advice to the younger ones when required.
Another fruitful year went past and soon it is the beginning of year 2014. Michael has been once again appointed as a Squad Leader. Michael has also been appointed as the Secretary of the NCO council. Michael had used every of his wits when performing his tasks and he would always complete his assignment on time. Pesta 2014 Kampar is probably the last time we could see Michael in his full BB uniform. On the last night of Pesta, as 12th BB Company, we had personal farewell bidding for him. It was sad as the members bid Michael goodbye with such a heavy heart. One of his Squad Members even commented him that he has been such a caring and responsible Squad Leader! We all gave him a warm hug as sign of appreciation and gratitude in recognition of his service and contribution to the Company for these 3 years. Keep up the good work, Michael!!
