I still remember back in the days when I look back now on how I delved into photography. It started off as just a hobby and now that hobby of mine has become my passion. Now I am the official photographer of 12th Kuala Lumpur Company Boys Brigade as well as for my school. I still remember back then when I got my first DSLR, I was still a newbie experimenting with photography. I was definitely overwhelmed by all the features provided by a DSLR switching from a camcorder. However, I did not give up and kept taking photos, volunteering to take photos in 12th KL. Although my photos weren’t published and I knew that they did not look good, I still kept trying and took as many photos as I could.

That same year I had also applied for my hobbies badge with photography as my hobby. Armed with only basic knowledge of photography, I quickly tried my best to learn up as much as I could about photography so that I would be able to achieve my hobbies badge. With my newly gained knowledge, I was able to successfully get my hobbies badge. That gave me even more encouragement to delve deeper into photography.

Slowly as time passes by, I got better and better at photography. I continue to take as many photos as I could during BB time especially during events and even during Pesta. I also upgraded my photography gear along the way gradually and I could definitely see improvements in my photos. Until in 2013 my photos started getting published on the 12th KL Facebook page. I started editing my photos to ensure their best before being published on the page. However, I had no one to mentor me or guide me throughout my journey in photography so I had to rely on experimenting and trial and error to improve my photos. Sometimes I ask for feedback from friends and Officers to further improve myself.

Over the years and many upgrades, I have gotten a hang of photography and now take photos for every special event held by 12th KL as well as my school. I however take a long time to publish my photos as I edit every single photo to ensure they look their best before publishing them. I have now also created a Facebook page at www.facebook.com/jacklimphoto where I post all my event photos. I now also have delved into videography experimenting with different ways to get the shots that I want. Even though I have never been taught or never tried videography, that didn’t stop me from experimenting and getting inspiration from the internet especially YouTube.

Never could I imagine I have come this far when I first started photography. If it wasn’t for my determination despite having no help I definitely couldn’t be where I am now. From my experience I would just like to encourage everyone reading this to never give up no matter how bleak the situation may be. I started off without any help and with my passion and determination I have become where I am today. If you have a passion in something, never give up as you may never know where your passion may take you!
